hooked on wine

Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.

Ernest Hemingway - Death in the Afternoon

Let's see, my love of wine started back in 1995 when I met my friend Lon Massongill. Amongst the many lessons I learned from him, he began to teach me how to appreciate a good bottle of wine. Whether it was a $5 bottle or a $200 bottle, his advice was always the same "you drink what you like!".   Well, that was the beginning of the journey for me, and on my way, I found a few fellow travelers (Becky, Aunt Linda, & Paul to name a few) of whom I would share more than one good bottle with.  In 1999, I  moved to CA where I soon found myself just over an hour away from some of the greatest wineries in the US (and the world!). Napa, Sonoma, Calistoga, Healdsburg, Alexander Valley, Santa Cruz were all within 2 hours of me :)

In 2004 I was lucky to meet Ryan O'Donnell.  Ryan is the creator of VineSugar.Com. He and I were neighbors for a few years when I lived in Dublin, CA. His site easily conveys his passion and love for wine! Needless to say, I've learned a thing or two about wine from him and in the future, I look forward to learning some more from his (and my own) adventures!

So the most common question one asks another when it comes to wine is "Do you prefer red or white?". Well, for me, that's easy. Red!!!  As for what kind of reds, well, my hands down favorite type of wine is a good strong complex Cabernet Sauvignon. Next would be a big Zinfandel or a bold Merlot. A good Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Syrah, or Petit Syrah can be tasty too! And of course, find me a worthy Bordeaux blend and I'm all over it :) At the end of the day, I will never turn down tasting a new wine because you never know from which bottle your next undiscovered favorite will be poured!
